College Daze Rodeo: A Reunion for Ferron Lucero and ENMU

The College Daze Rodeo in Portales, New Mexico, held annually at Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU), has long been a staple of the town’s cultural and sporting landscape. The event brings in over 600 college rodeo athletes from 17 different schools, including some of the biggest names in collegiate rodeo. Among the top competitors have been Ty Harris, a star in tie-down roping, known for his precision and speed, who is quickly rising through the ranks on the Pro Rodeo stage. His presence added a level of prestige to the competition, drawing fans eager to witness top-tier performances.

Adding to the excitement, ENMU alumnus Ferron Lucero returns in 2024 to announce the event. Born and raised in New Mexico, Ferron has been entertaining rodeo crowds for over two decades. His enthusiasm and charisma have led him to announce at historic rodeo venues nationwide. Whether it’s bull riding, team roping, or emceeing for various organizations, Ferron’s voice and presence are synonymous with energy and entertainment. In addition to his announcing career, Ferron has also become a passionate auctioneer, blending his love of the sport with his dynamic public speaking skills. Ferron, who earned a Sport Communication degree from ENMU, now resides in Stephenville, Texas, where he continues to strive to “#livebig” every day.

Portales itself comes alive during the College Daze Rodeo, as thousands of spectators flood the town to witness the action. The event provides a substantial boost to the local economy, with hotels, restaurants, and businesses benefiting from the influx of visitors. For Portales and ENMU, the rodeo represents more than just a sports competition; it’s a celebration of the region’s rich rodeo culture, bolstered by hometown talent like Ferron Lucero and the dedication of rodeo athletes from across the Southwest.

The 2024 College Daze Rodeo will be held from September 19 to September 21, 2024, at the Lewis Cooper Arena in Portales, New Mexico. This annual event is hosted by Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU).
